How To Improve Gas Mileage In New Chevy Trucks

By Jesse Ellison

There are numerous ways to increase gas mileage in full size Chevy trucks.

Gas mileage in Chevrolet full-size trucks has benefitted from technological innovations in recent years including improvements in the fuel injection systems and the Active Fuel Management feature that allows the engine to run on four cylinders while idling. Even with these advances, there is still ample room for improvement.

I own an ’08 four-wheel drive Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab. It has the 5.3-liter v8, plenty of power to haul the equipment my job requires. I bought it new from my Georgia Chevy dealer, and brand new it got about 17 miles per gallon. After some research and simple adjustments, I am able to average 20 and sometimes even 23 miles per gallon on the highway! Although this is not great, it is much better than comparable vehicles.

If you want to improve your gas mileage significantly, you have to consider a couple different factors. If you can save a .5 mile per gallon by changing to a better air filter, another 1 mpg with the electronics, this will start to add up. I will also note that for all the gas saving adjustments you could make, the least expensive and most beneficial will be behavioral changes. Adjusting one’s driving style to conserve fuel will have the most significant effect.

Some of the simple things I was to do myself to improve the gas mileage in my Chevy Silverado 1500 truck include:

Clean the fuel injectors to improve gas mileage in your Chevrolet Full size truck.

If the situation is really bad you may need a professional fuel system cleaning to dislodge and flush the debris, but in most cases minor clogging is an easy remedy. Simply use a product like Techroline or Lucas Fuel System Cleaner to help break down deposits and clean the injectors. The heads of the injectors work like a sprinkler. When clean they spray a fine mist of fuel into the cylinder that instantly and efficiently combusts, providing more power to the engine, and more mileage out of the same fuel. Concerning spark plugs, the AC Delco plugs that came as standard equipment are hard to beat. They should be clean though, and checked regularly.

Replace Your Air Filter

You do not have to spring for a fancy K&N cold air filter in your Chevy Silverado, but replacing the air filter you do have can yield significant improvement in the gas mileage of your Chevy full size truck. Even taking out the filter that is in the truck and vacuuming it to remove the dust can help. If you do go for the ‘cold air intake’ upgrade, be sure not to use the extra horsepower to ‘hot rod’ around, or you will certainly negate any gains.

For the Best Gas Mileage in your Chevy Silverado, use Normal Tires

You will get the best gas mileage when you use the factory rims and regular tires. Mud tires create more drag, both on the road and through the air, and wear out faster than a good set of BFGoodrich all terrains. Unless you really must have them, mud tires are an extravagant and unnecessary indulgence.

I hope that you can use these tips to improve the mileage in your full size truck.
